Experimental design studio and material research. 
Self-referential is a record of a series of fragmented narratives embedded in denim garments and objects, explored through experimentation and the abstraction of self-contained knowledge. The foundations of this ongoing studio based project reveal key elements that shape contemporary definitions of denim archetypes, investigating the various phases and expressions of denim, including its material techniques, processes, and commercial applications.

	A series of prototypes explore the notion of creating flat compositions for abstracting the signs and elements of denim archetypes. These elements become malleable and movable, creating multiple intersections and interconnections. As Ingold (2020) notes, such arrangements can be seen as Assemblages “collections of diverse elements that are contingently grouped together” where each part “retains its individuality while being affected by associations” (p. 20).

I responded to this prototyping method by focusing on the materials’ agency in the design process, arranging textile and treatment manipulation swatches in a series of compositions. This approach underlines material-led processes in design and challenges the traditional notion of materials as inert elements. Instead, it views them as products or ready-made, requiring careful consideration in design (Thornquist &#38;amp; Bigolin, 2017). Drawing further on Ingold’s ideas, this process aligns with Gathering,&#38;nbsp;a coming together of elements through “their own stories and trajectories,” producing “continuity and connection” (Ingold, 2020, p. 27)

	This series investigates the intricate and evolving relationship between denim and indigo dye. The first exploration is a look that focuses on indigo-dyed textile experimentation, examining how the colour expresses itself and interacts with different fabric types and their individual histories.
Indigo’s main characteristic is its distinctive blue, an spectrum of shades from deep and dark to bright, vibrant blues; and retaining its colour even after being washed down and faded over time. The visible marks denim accumulates with wear are intrinsically linked to both the indigo dye and the fabric’s weave construction. Denim aesthetics and collective associations make visible the physical crafting process: the stitching, the fabric manipulations, and the various treatments. These marks document gestures, habits, and movements of the wearer, creating unique textile narratives through time and wear. As Townsend (2011) notes, such narrative traces map connections from fibre to dye, to fabric, construction and finishing, and reveal how “colour change, textile change, worn patterns, and technical or artisanal construction” contribute to reading and understanding denim’s material story (p. 91).

The project refers to the "laundry effect" as reinterpreting the industrial process of washing denim. This series experiments with processes, techniques and their possible applications. It extends to interrogating the craft, the notion of 'error' or 'seconds' in industrialisation and replication.

	This series expands on the conventional way of developing and manufacturing denim, and, changing the purpose without replacing the technical descriptions that intentionally leave room for interpretation.

1&#38;nbsp; “The stitching process gives birth to denim jean, and the joining techniques are 
crucial in determining shape. The conversion of denim fabric into garments 
requires machines that are able to cope with the 
density of the fabric and the thickness of the seams. 
Therefore, heavy duty 
machines need to be used and specialised components have been 
developed to feed the material
effectively through the 
machine. Nother components such as heavy duty needles, sewing threads that have high strength for securing the seams, and buttons and studs for securing the pockets have been specially 
developed for this garment.”

The lookbook project is a live recorded presentation with people wearing 9 individual looks. It presents a series of recreated body gestures when wearing ‘denim’ garments. The project investigates how wearing gestures can function as a metaphor for creating alternative fashion dialogues and a unique language of denim wearing signs in everyday contexts.


	The outcome is a lookbook highlighting the collection as a series of garments/outfits that open an interactive form of wearing and layering meaning, recognising body language to communicate and interact with denim objects.

The publication is a collection of a series of explorations around 
'Collective perceptions, social interactions and everyday situations' 

It compiles multiple ways to relate and engage with everyday denim objects by presenting a series of gestures, expressions and artifacts with a sense of replication, including 'the lookbook' and 'The Poster'. These replications are associated with specific information coded by cultural references and large-scale production. The aim is to deepen our understanding and relationship with our everyday denim objects, contemporary modes of wearing and alternative production.</description>
